3 Mile, is a group of photographs made between 1998-1999 while in graduate school in Philadelphia. Struck by entire neigborhoods’s of abandoned buildings and the affect in experiencing a city left to decay, I chose to make work about the 3 miles distance between Newark NJ and Millburn NJ, where my parents lived at the time. Newark had a story similar to Philadelphia. Documenting the drastic change in demographics and the exteriors of homes, I was speaking to the phenomenon of US cities - a consequence of the history of race and class that lays at the foundation of this story.
