3 Mile, is a group of photographs made between 1998-1999 while in graduate school in Philadelphia. Struck by entire neigborhoods’s of abandoned buildings and the impact of experiencing a city left to decay, I chose to make work about the 3 miles distance between Newark NJ and Millburn NJ, where my parents lived at the time. Newark’s history in many ways mirrored Philadelphia. Documenting the drastic change in demographics and the exteriors of homes, I was speaking to the phenomenon of US cities - a consequence of the history of race and class that lays at the foundation of this story.
