My Mother’s Marks, Lines, Smudges, Shading

My Mother’s Marks, Lines, Smudges, Shading, is a collaboration between myself and my mother that started over ten years ago. The drawings are a collection that I ask my mother, whose art work I admire, to make a drawing of me. The work is partly born out of curiosity for how she will see me. The photographs are then made in relationship to the drawings and function as interpretations, as my face is painted to resemble the drawing. The collaboration speaks to perception and the internalization of our self objects by those closest to us.
