In Casa de Mujeres, my mother plays the role of three women in one fictional Latin American home. These photographs are based on the oral stories told to me by my mother, family photographs, and the impact of colonization. These images can be read as portraits of my mother as her various selves – like a nested doll, and as pictures that reveal the conflict of vanity, race, class and rivalry in one family shaped by the context of history. In these photographs the three women, twin sisters, and a maid symbolically represent the women of my family.
